Preschool Numeracy at Home: A Parent's Guide
Your preschooler can count to 20. They can recognise some numbers. Perhaps they can even write a few of them.
But does that mean they understand numbers?
Not necessarily.
A child can memorise the sequence 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 without yet understanding that five represents a quantity of five things. They may be able to say numbers in order but find it difficult to tell which of two groups has more objects. They may recognise the numeral 7 but not understand how 7 relates to 6 or 8.
This is why early numeracy is about much more than counting and writing numbers.
For preschoolers, the important work is gradually developing an understanding of quantities, relationships, patterns and simple mathematical ideas.
Children build this understanding through everyday experiences, conversations, play and eventually through numbers and written symbols.
What does numeracy mean for a preschooler?
Numeracy is often associated with numbers and arithmetic. For a young child, however, it is much broader.
A preschooler is beginning to make sense of questions such as:
How many are there?
Is this group bigger or smaller?
Do we have enough for everyone?
Which one has more?
What comes next?
Can I make another group with the same number?
What happens if I add one more?
Can I split these into two groups?
Which object is longer, shorter, heavier or lighter?
What shapes can I see?
Can I make a pattern?
These are all early mathematical ideas.
So when your child counts the number of plates needed for dinner, notices that one tower has more blocks than another, sorts socks by colour, or shares biscuits between family members, they are doing mathematics.
Preschool numeracy does not need to feel like a boring or effortful lesson.
Beyond Counting

Counting is not the whole story.
Counting is an important foundation for numeracy. Children need to learn the number sequence and understand how counting relates to quantities.
But there is a difference between reciting numbers and understanding what those numbers represent.
Imagine a child who happily says:
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10!
Now put five blocks in front of them and ask:
How many blocks are there?
The child may count:
1, 2, 3, 4, 5.
If they understand that there are five blocks altogether, they are beginning to connect counting with quantity.
But a child who simply recites numbers without making that connection is still developing this understanding.
This distinction matters because number sense grows from understanding quantities and relationships, not from memorising a longer sequence of numbers.
A child who can count to 20 is not necessarily more mathematically capable than a child who can count to 10 but understands quantities very well.
How numeracy develops
A simple progression is:
Doing → talking → thinking → representing
Or, in slightly more formal terms:
Concrete experience → mathematical language → reasoning → symbols and written work
These stages are not rigid steps that every child completes one at a time. They overlap. A child may move back and forth between them.
But the progression gives us a useful way to think about how young children develop mathematical understanding.
1. Concrete experience: Let children handle the maths
Young children learn a great deal by interacting with real things.
Blocks, buttons, spoons, fruits, toy cars, leaves, cups and household objects can all become materials for mathematical exploration.
Your child might:
count five blocks
put similar objects together
make two groups
compare two piles
arrange objects from smallest to largest
make a repeating pattern
fill and empty containers
build a tall or short tower
At this stage, the child is experiencing mathematical ideas rather than simply being told about them.
For example, instead of immediately showing a child the numeral 5, you might first let them make a group of five objects.
The quantity comes first.
The written symbol can come later.
2. Mathematical language: Give children words for what they notice
Once children are exploring quantities and relationships, everyday conversation can help them make sense of what they are experiencing.
Use words such as:
more, fewer, same, many, few, bigger, smaller, longer, shorter, before, after, next, first, last, altogether, half, between, near and far.
For example:
You have three cars. I have five. Who has more?
Or:
We have four plates here. How many more do we need?
Or simply:
This tower is taller than yours.
These conversations help children connect their experiences with mathematical language.
You do not need to turn every interaction into a question.
Sometimes simply describing what you see is enough:
You put three red blocks together and three blue blocks together. Both groups have the same number.
Over time, children begin using this language themselves.
3. Reasoning: Encourage children to think about the maths
The next important part is helping children think about relationships between quantities.
Instead of always telling them the answer, give them opportunities to work things out.
For example:
Which plate has more biscuits?
Then:
How do you know?
Or:
We have three apples. If I put one more here, will we have more or fewer?
Or:
Can you make another group with the same number of blocks?
The child does not always need to answer correctly.
The thinking is the important part.
You can also ask children to predict what might happen:
We have five cars. What do you think will happen if we add another one?
Or encourage them to explain their thinking:
How did you know these two groups have the same number?
This moves numeracy beyond memorising answers. The child is beginning to understand why something is true.
4. Symbols and written work: Connect the ideas to numbers
Eventually, children begin connecting quantities and mathematical ideas with symbols.
For example:
five objects → the idea of five → the numeral 5
Later, they can begin exploring simple written representations such as:
3 + 2 = 5
But the written symbols are representations of ideas that the child has already begun experiencing.
This is why it can be useful to think of written numeracy as another way of representing mathematical thinking, rather than the starting point for learning mathematics.
A child who has played with five blocks, counted them, talked about five and recognised groups of five has something meaningful to connect to when they see 5 on a page.

The building blocks of number sense
So what exactly are preschoolers developing when they build number sense?
There are several related skills.
Counting
Children learn the number sequence and gradually become more accurate and confident at counting objects.
But counting is not simply saying numbers in order. Children also need to learn how counting applies to actual objects.
One-to-one correspondence
This is the understanding that each object gets one number word when we count.
For example, when counting four apples:
One apple, two apples, three apples, four apples.
Each apple is counted once.
This sounds simple to an adult, but it is an important part of learning to count meaningfully.
You can practise it naturally while setting the table:
One plate for you, one for me, one for Dad...
Or while handing out crayons:
One crayon for each child.
Cardinality
Cardinality is the idea that the last number counted tells us how many objects there are altogether.
A child counts:
One, two, three, four, five.
They then understand that there are five objects.
They do not need to start counting again when you ask:
So how many are there?
This is an important step in moving from reciting a counting sequence to understanding quantity.
Comparing quantities
Children gradually learn to compare groups:
more, fewer and the same.
You can do this almost anywhere.
Put two piles of blocks on the floor and ask:
Which group has more?
You can also let the child create the groups themselves:
Can you make a group with more blocks than mine?
The important thing is not how quickly they answer. It is the opportunity to notice and reason about quantities.
Subitising
Subitising means recognising a small quantity without counting each individual object.
For example, you may look at three dots on a dice and immediately know there are three.
Young children can develop this ability through:
dice games
fingers
dot cards
small groups of toys
objects on a plate
You can simply show a small group and ask:
How many do you see?
With very small quantities, try not to turn every opportunity into a counting exercise. Sometimes it is useful to let children simply see the quantity.
Composing and separating numbers
Children also begin discovering that numbers can be made in different ways.
For example, five objects can be divided into:
2 + 3
or
4 + 1
This understanding becomes important later for addition and subtraction.
You can explore it with blocks:
Here are five blocks. Can you make two groups?
There is no need to introduce written addition immediately.
The child is first discovering the mathematical relationship.
Solving simple problems
Everyday life provides countless little mathematical problems.
For example:
We have three people and only two spoons. What should we do?
Or:
We have four children and eight strawberries. Can everyone have the same number?
Or:
There are five cars in the box. I took two out. How many are left?
These situations help children see that numbers are useful for solving real problems.

Numeracy is all around the house
One of the easiest ways to support early numeracy is to notice the mathematics that is already part of family life.
At mealtimes
How many plates do we need?
Can you give everyone one spoon?
Who has more grapes?
While cooking
We need two cups of flour.
Which bowl is bigger?
Can you help me count five tomatoes?
While tidying
Can you put all the cars together?
How many red blocks are there?
Which pile has fewer?
On the stairs
How many steps are there?
Can we count them together?
While shopping
We need three bananas.
Which packet is bigger?
Do we have enough apples for everyone?
During travel
How many buses can you see?
Which building is taller?
What shape is that sign?
These are small interactions, but they give children repeated opportunities to use mathematical ideas in meaningful situations.
You don't need to turn everything into a lesson
It is easy to fall into the habit of thinking that learning requires a planned activity.
Sometimes it does.
But preschool children also learn through the ordinary things they do every day.
If your child is helping you set the table, you do not need to stop and announce:
Now we are going to do a numeracy activity.
You can simply involve them in what needs to be done.
We need four plates. Can you help me count them?
That is enough.
The same applies to play.
If your child is building a tower, you might notice:
Yours has six blocks. Mine has four.
If they are sorting toy animals:
You put all the farm animals here. Where should the sea animals go?
The world is full of opportunities to notice quantity, size, shape, position, sequence and patterns.
How to use worksheets?
Worksheets can have a place in preschool learning.
They can give children opportunities to practise skills, recognise symbols and represent ideas on paper.
But a worksheet cannot provide every experience a young child needs to develop mathematical understanding.
Consider a worksheet asking a child to circle the group containing five objects.
That can be useful practice.
But the child also needs opportunities to:
handle five real objects
make a group of five
count five objects
give five objects to someone
recognise five objects
compare five with another quantity
discover different ways of making five
These experiences give meaning to the numeral and the written task.
So rather than thinking of play and worksheets as competing approaches, it may be more useful to think about what each one contributes.
Play and everyday experiences help children build understanding.
Written activities can help them practise and represent that understanding.
The balance will change as children grow.
What should you look for in your child's numeracy development?
Parents often ask questions such as:
Can my child count to 20?
Can they write numbers?
Do they recognise all the numerals?
These can be useful things to observe, but they don't tell us everything about a child's mathematical understanding.
You can also look for moments such as:
Can your child give you five objects when you ask for five?
Can they count objects without repeatedly counting the same object?
Do they understand that the last number counted tells how many there are?
Can they tell which group has more?
Can they make two groups with the same number of objects?
Can they recognise very small quantities without counting?
Do they notice when you add or remove an object?
Can they solve simple problems involving quantities?
Do they notice patterns?
Do they use mathematical words in conversation?
These observations tell you much more about how your child is thinking about numbers.
And remember that children do not all develop every skill at exactly the same time.
The purpose of observing these things is not to create another checklist for parents to worry about. It is to help you notice what your child already understands and what you might explore next.
When should children start writing numbers?
There is no need to make written numbers the starting point for numeracy.
A child may understand that there are five objects without being able to form the numeral 5 neatly.
Those are different abilities.
Writing numbers involves additional skills, including fine-motor control, visual memory and learning how the symbols are formed.
So if a child struggles to write a number but understands the quantity, that does not necessarily mean they have poor number sense.
You can continue giving them opportunities to experience and talk about quantities while gradually introducing written numerals.
For example:
Here are five buttons. This is the number we use to write five: 5.
The symbol now has something meaningful attached to it.
So, what really matters in preschool numeracy?
It is easy to focus on visible achievements.
A child who can count to 50 or write numbers from 1 to 10 looks as though they are making clear progress.
But some of the most important mathematical learning is less obvious.
It happens when a child realises that two groups contain the same number of objects.
When they notice that adding one more makes a group larger.
When they work out how to share eight biscuits between four people.
When they recognise three dots on a dice without counting.
When they understand that five can be split into two and three.
When they begin asking their own questions about quantities, shapes, patterns and measurements.
These are signs that the child is beginning to think mathematically.
And that is what early numeracy is really about.
The big picture
For preschoolers, we can think of the journey as:
Experience it → talk about it → think about it → represent it
Give children things they can touch and manipulate.
Give them words to describe what they notice.
Give them opportunities to compare, predict, explain and solve little problems.
Then gradually connect those ideas to numbers, symbols and written mathematics.
There is plenty of time for formal mathematics later.
For now, the aim is to help children discover that numbers describe the world around them and can help them make sense of it.
That is the beginning of number sense.
