Krishna Janmashtami Activities for Kids
Updated: Aug 28
Krishna Janmashtami, also known simply as Janmashtami or Gokulashtami, is an annual Hindu festival that celebrates the birth of Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu.
Books on Krishna
Books are wonderful additions to traditional Janmashtami celebrations - use them to create storytelling and drama activities.
Main 10 stories to tell small children about the leelas of Krishna:
1. The Universe in Little Krishna’s Mouth
The Story: Yashoda asks Krishna to open his mouth to check if he swallowed garden soil. When he opens wide, she sees the entire cosmos, stars, and rivers glowing inside him.
The Deeper Moral: Divinity and wonder exist within every small and ordinary part of creation.
2. The Great Butter Pot Adventure (Makhan Chor)
The Story: Krishna forms human pyramids with his village friends and shares pots of fresh butter with playful monkeys.
The Deeper Moral: Joy multiplies when we share our treasures freely with friends and all living beings.
3. Lifting Mount Govardhan
The Story: When torrential rains threaten the village, little Krishna lifts the entire Govardhan mountain on his little finger to shelter every person and animal.
The Deeper Moral: True strength means protecting the vulnerable and living in harmony with nature.
4. Cleansing the Yamuna River (Kaliya Mardana)
The Story: Krishna dances atop the serpent Kaliya to stop him from poisoning the river, then gently asks him to relocate peacefully to the deep ocean.
The Deeper Moral: We must protect clean water and resolve conflicts without unnecessary harm.
5. Krishna and the Fruit Seller
The Story: Krishna offers a tiny handful of raw grain to a kind fruit vendor in exchange for berries, and the vendor's basket magically fills with glowing jewels.
The Deeper Moral: Pure generosity and love matter far more than the material value of a gift.
6. The Magic of the Flute (Venu Gopala)
The Story: Whenever Krishna plays his bamboo flute, restless calves, deer, and flying birds pause quietly together to listen.
The Deeper Moral: Gentleness, music, and patience can calm fear and bring peace to any environment.
7. The Gift of the Peacock Feather
The Story: Peacocks dance with joy alongside Krishna and happily gift him their most beautiful fallen feather for his crown.
The Deeper Moral: Gratitude and humility make simple gifts the most cherished honors.
8. The Story of Two Trees (Yamalarjuna Deliverance)
The Story: Bound to a wooden mortar, toddler Krishna crawls between two giant old trees and frees two trapped celestial beings with a gentle tug.
The Deeper Moral: Compassion can liberate others from long-held burdens and mistakes.
9. Krishna and Sudama
The Story: Sudama visits his childhood friend Krishna carrying only a handful of beaten rice, and Krishna welcomes him with immense love and honor.
The Deeper Moral: True friendship cares about sincerity and warmth, never wealth or social status.
10. Crossing the Yamuna River
The Story: Father Vasudeva carries newborn Krishna in a woven basket across a stormy river, while the great serpent Sheshanaga shields the baby like an umbrella.
The Deeper Moral: Courage, hope, and trust guide us safely through difficult journeys.

Krishna Themed Shadow Puppet Show
Here is how to do shadow puppet storytelling (step by step).
For this Krishna Janmashtami activity, children can make simple shadow puppets of baby Krishna, butter pots, dahi handi and other characters from Krishna's stories using black paper or cardboard.
Attach each puppet to a stick or straw, then set up a white cloth or paper screen with a lamp or torch behind it. The children stand behind the screen and move their puppets so that their shadows appear on the other side.
Choose a simple Krishna story and let the children act it out through the shadows. They can also experiment with moving the puppets closer to or farther from the light to see how the shadows become bigger or smaller. An adult can narrate the story, or older children can create their own dialogue.
A bedsheet, a lamp and homemade puppets are all you need for this activity. It is a simple way to combine Janmashtami storytelling, imaginative play and learning about light and shadows.
